      About Molokai
Molokai is the least developed of Hawaii's major islands, known for its slower pace, strong local culture, and lack of high-rise resorts. If you're considering a move here, here's what to know.

    Getting to Molokai
Molokai is reached by short inter-island flights from Honolulu or Maui — there is currently no ferry service to the island. The island's small commercial airport, Molokai Airport (MKK), is near Hoolehua.

Communities
Kaunakakai is the main town and commercial center. Maunaloa, on the West End, is home to several condo resort communities. Kualapuu and the East End offer a quieter, more rural setting.

    Short-Term Rentals
Molokai has some of the strictest short-term rental rules in Maui County. Most residential homes cannot legally be used as vacation rentals. A limited number of resort-zoned condos (including Wavecrest and Ke Nani Kai) currently retain short-term rental rights, though those are scheduled to phase out under Maui County's Bill 9 by January 1, 2031. Buyers considering rental income should verify a property's specific zoning and permit status before purchasing.

        Cost of Living & Lifestyle
Because everything is shipped or flown in, day-to-day costs on Molokai run higher than the U.S. mainland average. Many residents value this trade-off for the island's privacy, natural beauty, and close-knit community.

Schools
Molokai is served by Hawaii's statewide public school system, with several elementary, middle, and high schools on the island.
